Seal of Mine (印章) is an experimental project to create own unique Chinese seal with personality through digital processes.
A personal Chinese seal serves as identification as well as a signature in China. It is often divided into 3 parts, Feet, Body and Top. Feet - Vertical reflected ancient Chinese character(s) is carved at the bottom of seal that states the family surname or full name of the seal owner. Body - A small block made from stone mostly. Top - An animal sculpture is used to place on the top of seal as the classical Chinese astrological symbol representing the Chinese birth year of the seal owner in the Chinese Zodiac, a 12-part cycle Chinese birth years: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig.
In the Seal of Mine, people with different family surname are invited to make their own seal. Those people's name in Seal Script (an ancient style of Chinese calligraphy) is to be carved and printed on the feet of seal. And the body of people is scanned three-dimensionally and volumetric reconstructed into digital data by the use of sensing camera. They can perform their own personal postures as human statue being captured in the moment and printing on the top of seal. Through a series of digital processes, an unique seal with personality is printed layer by layer, by using a three-dimension printer installed with the raw materials of filament. The depiction of physical characteristics expresses inner feelings, thoughts, and attitudes. That represents own personality and is unique to each person as well as their names.
